It was time stamped 10 minutes ago. I felt like I’d been caught playing hooky—which I kind of was. I decided to go with honesty.

–pool. what’s up?

–come to meeting room 50B. be here in ten or I’m going to assume you disobeyed me

chapter five

The convention corridors spread out like a labyrinth, each stretch of meeting space looking like the last. Despite that, I found 50B in 11 minutes. Linn would forgive a minute, right?

“According to my watch, you’re late.”

Guess not.

“Sorry, got lost.”

The room was set for a breakout session of some sort, with enough seating for 100 or more. At the front of the room, up on a small dais, sat two skirted tables and a podium. Behind that, a screen that was currently blank.

“So what did you need me for?” I asked.

Linnea was wearing the same outfit she’d had on this morning, a silk turquoise paisley dress that continued to refine my view of her Director of Ice brand. It was more feminine than the pantsuits she normally sported, but she was also here to sell, not just direct.

“I got asked to participate on a panel. Just this morning,” Linn said.

For one short moment, all I could focus on was her exotic accent. Did she moan differently? Did she cry out for more with that accent?

“Are you listening, Adam?”

“Sorry, yes. A panel. Seems easy enough.”

“The other panelists are the marketing directors from Reebok, Oakley, and Lululemon,” she said, her calm voice starting to fray.

“Oh.”

I’d never seen Linnea Sorenson look visibly anxious, although it was subtle. She stood stiffly on stage, her shoulders tight, and kept brushing a strand of imaginary blonde hair out of her eyes.

“Right. Oh.”

I asked the obvious question. “How’s a software development company supposed to compete with those established brands?”

“Actually, I have some ideas.” She gestured woodenly to the pad of paper sitting on one of the tables. “That’s not why I needed you here.”

For some reason, when she looked down at me from up there on the stage, my heart started racing. It was like I knew what came next, yet couldn’t quite wrap my brain around it.

“Remember a couple nights ago, I told you how I get when I’m stressed?”

Horny. “Yes…”

“I’m stressed. And I need some relief.”

Slow breath. In and out. I wanted to run up there and tackle her. I wanted to pull her slight body into my arms and ravish her mouth as we tore our clothes off. But that’s also precisely what she wanted, too, and I hadn’t been this pig-headed until now only to throw all my cred away because Linnea Sorenson told me I could finally jump.

“Didn’t you get enough last night?” I said instead.

Linnea’s eyes flared. She started to relax. This was a game she could play. She sauntered forward, pulling her chair back. It scraped loudly along the hollow dais, reverberating around the empty meeting hall.

“Jealousy. I like that,” she said. “You know what my husband said when I sent him the pic you took of me and Tyler this morning? He said, finally.
